John L. Coalson has a distinguished career as a lawyer. For more than twenty years, his practice focused on advising companies regarding the application of state unclaimed property laws to their businesses, including assisting companies in the structuring of gift card, loyalty, award, and promotional card and other forms of prepaid programs, and representation of companies in multi-state audits and voluntary disclosures agreements. Mr. Coalson also focused on consumer protection and regulatory matters associated with gift cards and other stored value instruments.
He is a retired Partner of the national law firm Alston & Bird LLP. During his 40+ year career, he has advised almost half of the Fortune 100 on unclaimed property and state tax matters. Mr. Coalson is a distinguished Fellow of the American College of Tax Counsel, and served for more than a decade as an Adjunct Professor of Law in the Emory University School of Law. He has been listed in Best Lawyers in America for more than 25 years and is recognized individually in Chambers Guide to America’s Leading Lawyers for Businesses as one of America’s leading tax lawyers. He is the author or co-author of more than two dozen publications, including the BNA Tax Management Portfolio Unclaimed Property, and more than 100 presentations and technical papers on unclaimed property and tax law. Mr. Coalson also serves as National Legal Counsel of the Arthritis Foundation, one of the largest national voluntary health agencies in the U.S.
